{in the studio with} paper dahlia

Name/Company:
Kerry Doyle from Paper Dahlia

Location:
San Francisco, CA
How many years have you been in the wedding industry?
6 years

How did you get started?
I got my start in the stationery business after I lost my job as an art store manager and buyer in 2004 (I also have a BFA in painting). I decided that it was an opportune time to do something I really wanted to do. I've always been fascinated by typography and color, but it was the feedback I received after designing my own wedding invitations that gave me the confidence to go for it... and the support of my wonderful husband, of course!
Where do you go for inspiration?
Pinterest! It is my number one obsession! I mean what did we do before Pinterest? If you are not on it you should be! Beyond that, I have a long list of style and wedding blogs that I visit daily... Postcards & Pretties, of course, but also: Creature Comforts, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Design Sponge, SF Girl By Bay, and so on.

What's your signature style?
I don't really have a signature style. Sometimes I enjoy designing something very dainty and vintage inspired, other times it's simple and modern. I like to push myself creatively whenever possible so I like to try new things. But it also just depends on the project I'm working on at the time and the input I get from my clients.
What’s your favorite spot in your studio?
Right now my favorite spot in my studio is the big worktable in front of the window.  The weather has been wonderful lately and the light coming through is amazing... and really great for reading and a cup of tea. I used to have a big overstuffed chair in my studio but I had to get rid of it because it was a little too comfy, if you know what I mean.

Do you have a current favorite color palette or wedding trend?
Limiting myself to one favorite color palette is almost impossible, but right now I love a simple black and off-white color palette. I'm also really loving the look of natural craft paper when paired with bright colors. I try not to follow trends too much, instead focusing on classic designs that stand the test of time. However, one trend that I really love is typography that is hand-drawn. I love the way it gives a design that unique one of a kind look!
Everyone say "Hi" to Baron
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I would love to still be doing what I am doing now in 5 years time... perhaps with a few more employees. I just took my first letterpress class a few weeks ago so I would love to be printing my own stationery as well. I also have dreams of opening up a design studio/storefront in a wonderful light filled space... ahhhh.

Finish this sentence
“I can’t live without…” my computer! It's sad but true. However, I finally just got an iPhone and that is my favorite toy at the moment.
